From Humble Beginnings to Empowering Change
Saliamo Agri-Ventures, a Kenyan enterprise launched in 2022, embodies the spirit of innovation and community upliftment. They began by progressing to greenhouse production of capsicum. Their success wasn’t limited to their farm gate; they supplied wholesalers and retailers in town, demonstrating the viability of their approach.
Embracing Challenges and Value Addition
Undeterred by a setback in 2023, Saliamo Agri-Ventures displayed remarkable resilience. They identified an opportunity in vegetable value addition through drying. Resourcefully, they began with sun-drying, later constructing a cost-effective dryer using ingenious upcycling (dam liner and wooden tables). The quality of their dried vegetables garnered referrals, especially from those traveling abroad, highlighting the increasing demand for convenient, healthy options.
Empowering Women and Building a Sustainable Future
Social responsibility is woven into the fabric of Saliamo Agri-Ventures. Recognizing the underrepresentation of youth in agriculture, they championed the “Blessed Hands Women’s Group.” This initiative encourages women to embrace farming, particularly during fallow seasons when land is available. Their commitment extends to training in beekeeping and mushroom cultivation, showcasing a diversified approach. Furthermore, they actively involve women in the vegetable drying value addition process.
Innovation and Sustainability: A Winning Formula
Saliamo Agri-Ventures understands the evolving consumer preference for healthy, convenient food options. They leverage innovative processing methods to transform vegetables into premium products that cater to modern needs. From meticulous planting and harvesting to blanching and drying, every step prioritizes retaining nutritional value, enhancing flavor, and extending shelf life.
Sustainability at its Core
Sustainability is paramount at Saliamo Agri-Ventures. They collaborate with local farmers to secure a steady supply of organic produce, minimizing environmental impact. Their commitment extends to eco-friendly packaging, prioritizing recyclability and waste reduction. Additionally, they actively promote youth and women’s empowerment, creating social and economic opportunities through job creation.
A Philosophy, Not Just a Process
Saliamo Agri-Ventures views value addition as more than just a process; it’s a philosophy driving sustainability and consumer satisfaction. They challenge the perception of agriculture as solely for the elderly, demonstrating that anyone can embrace farming. Their resourcefulness in constructing a dryer using local materials exemplifies their commitment to accessibility. Ultimately, youth and women’s empowerment are the cornerstones of Saliamo Agri-Ventures, and their passion is contagious – they aspire to see more young people actively involved in agribusiness.
